TIPS ON MAKING YOUR FAMILY SESSION INTENTIONALLY UNIQUE
May 18, 2022
Well I am re-writing this blog for the second time, because my first go around got deleted. I’m not sure how, but hope you guys love this because I have to remember everything I just poured my heart into haha!
Anyways, I hope you are having a great week so far. Happy Wednesday!
I don’t think I’ve shared this with you, but my word for this year (and the last couple of years really) has been intentional. To be more intentional with how I speak, the relationships & connections I make, and the way I run my business, the way I feel, and my relationship with the Lord.
Often, I get questions on how to get the best family photos, or how to make our kids smile. It’s so important to me that my families get the best family photos! So, I thought there’s no better way than to share with you, tips on making your session Intentionally unique.
1. Choosing your Family Photographer!
This is one of the most important tips. Find a family photographer who’s images you connect with. If you love their editing style, their personality, the way they capture families, sounds like it could be a good fit! It’s important you find a photographer that guides you through your session preparation, understands your wants & vision for the shoot, and meets your exceptions throughout the whole process. Don’t ever settle on a photographer because they are “cheap” or because you know “a friend.” If family photos are really important to you, hire someone you can rely on and trust.
2. Deciding on a Location!
After you decide on your photographer, now it’s time to decide on a location. I believe it’s important to choose a location that has meaning to you and your family. Maybe Spring time is your favorite time of year, and you’re dreaming of having your session in wildflowers. Maybe you’d like to shoot at the summer carnival because it’s one of your favorite places to go to with your family. Or maybe you and your husband just bought your dream farmhouse and you’d like to be documented in your cherished home. Locations are endless!
Maybe a location doesn’t matter to you much, and that’s okay! If I have a family that reaches out to me with no location in mind, there are plenty of local parks that I suggest, that show off Oregons green grass & trees.
3. Think Outside of the Box!
If you’re wanting a unique session, think of different props you can incorporate into your shoot. If you’re wanting a spring shoot in wildflowers, maybe bring a white sheet to hang and a vintage wood chair. If you’re wanting to an in home session with your family, maybe incorporate something you love to do together. This could be anything from baking, painting, or grabbing veggies out of the garden. These simple props can be fun & really tell the story of you and your family.
4. What to Wear!
It can be a challenge deciding on what to wear for your session, especially when you’re dressing your whole family. Some general tips I suggest are dressing in soft, neutral colors & patterns, and dress for comfort. Choosing a few soft neutral colors that compliment one another, are always timeless. And make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing. This session is about capturing memories with you and your little, so you don’t want to feel uncomfy during your session. Remember, your clothing should reflect your personal style. You want to wear something you feel genuinely confident & happy in.
5. Enjoy & have Fun!
I always share this with my families. but have fun & don’t sweat the small stuff. I’ll help direct & guide your family during the session, so don’t worry about how you should pose or where you should look. Enjoy this session with your family & have fun. Create an experience for your family so they will enjoy the session, just as much as you will. Go out for lunch before your session. Go grab dessert after your session. Or go home and make homemade cookies.
